Rain needed

Monday, May 21, 2018

We have gone from too wet to too dry.  The last two days of soybean planting (May 10 and 11) are two I’d like to have over again.  Those fields just dried out too fast to allow good emergence of the soybeans.  I planted the beans as deep as I dared!  Some areas are spouted and growing, some beans are swollen a bit, and some are merely lying there in the dust, waiting for rain.  And, now it is too dry to replant… until it rains.  So, after the next rain, we will evaluate the stand, and most likely we will run in some additional seeds… but not until we get some good moisture!

Other than that, most fields look pretty good.  John is out today applying a post-emerge herbicide on the earliest planted corn.  He can get over the corn acres in about 4 days of spraying… then, the corn will be considered ‘laid by’…which means that the last field operation has occurred until it is ready for harvest!

So, today, the crops are a mixed bag; mostly good, but not all.  We are praying for rain.

Pat and I have plans to go to a Cardinals’ game in St. Louis a week from Friday.  Let’s hope they have a good game that night.  I prefer a game that is not a ‘pitchers’ duel’, but one with lots and lots of runs scored!   …and that the Cardinals pick up the win!

Hope you all have a pleasant week.
