Big snow

Saturday, December 7, 2013

Yesterday, we were house-bound all day.  It made no sense to get out to clear the lane until the snow stopped.  It began Thursday night about dark, and kept coming for about 26 hours!  The reports list the snowfall at 11 inches (28mm).  The good thing about this one is that it did not ‘drift’ very much– drifting snow causes bigger problems for our lane.  Ross was out with the CIH 290 and rear blade, and today I took out the JD 7130 with the blower.  I got our circle drive passable, and the driveway to our garage.  Should be no problem getting vehicles in and out today.  The forecasters on Friday were reporting another snow event for us on Sunday, but now they’ve backed off that.  We don’t mind the snow, especially one like this, for it is easily cleared away.  We are happy that we missed the freezing rain and ice that had been predicted.  The electric power is still on!

This is what it looks like to use the blower to clear a path down our lane. Even though it's toasty warm in the tractor, (and 9ºF outside) running backwards for a long time puts a crick in your neck!

This is what it looks like to use the blower to clear a path down our lane.  It is toasty warm inside the tractor cab, even though it is 9ºF outside.  However, the snow blower is mounted on the back of the tractor, and running backwards for a long time puts a crick in your neck!

Check a video of this work on our YouTube site.

The snow was a beautiful sight to see.  The big flakes were gently drifting down all day, not driven into huge drifts by a stiff wind.  When it was over, it was pleasant just to look around at the white blanket covering everything.

The march of the seasons is unrelenting.  In two weeks, the days begin to get longer again…Spring is on the way, but let’s enjoy today, too.
