Good news and bad news on a Monday

April 21, 2025

Well, let’s start with the bad news… we got rain again over the weekend.  In two separate rain events, we received about 1.3″ (33mm).  That’s enough to keep us out of the fields again for a few days.  As a result, my plan to hook up the air cart and drill to the 9R540 and fill the cart with soybean seed today has been put off to another day.  At best, I might be able to plant by Wednesday.

John cleaned out the sprayer today, so that he can move to spraying corn burndown as soon as the conditions allow.  That clean-out of the pumping system, boom, nozzles and tank is not simple or easy or quick.  But he is very thorough, and it will be ready to roll the next available day.

Brandon has the corn planter hooked up and filled with seed…he’s ready!   Maybe I’ll do that with the soybean planting machine tomorrow or Wednesday morning…

The good news!   The rain came on Saturday and very early this morning.    Therefore, we did NOT get rain on Easter Sunday!   According to the old saying, “If it rains on Easter, it will rain for the next seven Sundays”, we now don’t have to expect more rains every weekend until June.   But rain is predicted for Friday.

We had a lovely Easter holiday.  Church services at WCC were very special.  We had an early(ish) SONrise service, breakfast, and then the regular service.   The place was filled.  The music was moving, and the Good News of Jesus resurrection was proclaimed!

A photo spot was set up in the Fellowship Hall. Many people used it!

Then, at the evening meal, John and his family came over and we had supper together… and grandma and grandpa got to spend some quality time with the granddaughters!

We caught a family picture after supper.

We haven’t been too concerned about the lack of planting progress…so far… but now we are getting toward the end of April… a bit of urgency is beginning to show up.  The soybean burndown is about 40% done, and all the NH3 we can do has already been applied.  We will do the remainder of that task once the floodwaters from White River dry down.  From any perspective, it could be better, but it could also be worse.  We will use the opportunities that come to make planting progress…when that opportunity comes!   Matthew 6:34.

Have a great week.
