Last Saturday morning, I was able to go up to the Lett farm (between Wheatland and Bicknell) and finish off the planting of double-crop soybeans (DCB). I had been planting there the previous Saturday, and ran out of seed. I moved the tractor home with the intention of finishing on Monday. I would get enough seed to plant the remaining 35 acres, and then finish off the planting. Well, it rained Sunday night and Monday and a little bit on Tuesday… so, I was not able to return the the Lett farm until last Saturday the 5th. There was still one little patch of water in a terrace that I had to drive around, but the remainder of those acres went into the soil in a good way.
The DCB that were planted in June are looking pretty nice today. It took them about a week to show up through the straw. Today, they’re beginning to turn the field back to green.
Later this week, we will disconnect the air cart and drill from the JD 9R540 tractor. We will also decouple the cart from the drill, because we have no shed of an appropriate size to store them hooked together. I always look forward to getting those tools hooked up in April, and now in July, I’m looking forward to getting them unhooked and stored away. In my thinking, it is too late for any planting or replanting of soybeans after July 10.
The planted acre reports have been made to the local FSA office and to our crop insurance agent.
I washed the cart and drill last Saturday after I got back home from the Lett farm. They’re probably not #Andyclean, but not bad either. Once unhooked, the tractor will get a thorough wash, and it will be #Andyclean!
We will be monitoring the condition of many of the soybean fields over the next two weeks. Brandon and Brandon made an inspection of soybean fields this morning, and they are developing a plan of action for application of herbicide and/or fungicide. There will be wheat also delivered to market this week; we still have some contracts to fill at ADM in Evansville.
My plan is to do some roadside spraying from the seat of the Gator, and also some mowing with the JD R15 rotary cutter (bush hog) and the JD 6145R tractor.
Today the temperature is in the low 80s, and it just feels more comfortable. The weekend was a hot one! We got 4/10th of rain this morning, and it was quite welcome here.
