Wheat harvest has wrapped up.

Monday, June 30, 2025

Wheat harvest wrapped up last Thursday evening.  We finished up at the Lett farm about 6pm, and by 8pm, we had the machines and headers and trucks moved back home.  It was a good feeling to get that finished.  On Friday, we calculated the results.   The average of all fields set a new yield record for us…116, surpassing the previous record in 2023 of 113.  Of all the weather challenges this year has brought us, the Lord made a bright spot for our wheat crop, and we’re grateful.   This was above our expectation, for the month of May was very wet and chilly, and we figured the yields would be impacted just like they were when May of 2024 was very wet.  But, this was a very pleasant and welcome surprise!  PTL!

Here are some pictures of the team at wheat harvest.

Brandon D in the grain cart… a superb operator. With many farms, the grain cart operator is blamed for any problem, and gets yelled at a lot. Not here.

John ran double-duty. Operated the elevator at home, plus ran trucks, too.

Larry came each day from Linton to run trucks, once each morning to the market in Evansville, and for the remainder of the day from the field to the farm elevator. He’s on the road again this morning to ADM First Avenue in Evansville.

This was not during wheat harvest, but was on Saturday. I was planting double-crop soybeans (DCB) and Pat brought me breakfast, and then rode with me for a little while.

The week was a hot one with long days.  But the A/C worked well, and there was very few mechanical issues.  Brandon had some trouble with the AutoTrac system in his combine, but finally got it working.  He remarked how much better it was with the automatic steering!

John is busy with spraying soybeans, as he reviews each field once a week, and makes a plan for what must be done that week.  His sprayer work is very precise.  A fungicide will be applied soon, too.

As the trucking gets caught up, Brandon D will put in some effort to wash the machines and get them stored away for fall.

Both combines are currently stored away, waiting for a turn on the wash pad. They didn’t get very dirty during wheat harvest. Clean-up should go well.

My next focus will be roadside mowing.

Have a good week.
