Setting trusses… and other news…

Thursday morning, March 28, 2024

The building crew brought in a small crane this morning to put in place the remainder of the trusses on the new building.  They got started setting trusses yesterday afternoon, but with this crane, they were even faster.  The crane was finished and gone by 9 am!  It is really fascinating to watch this experienced crew put together the parts of this building.  There are not many wasted motions, they move efficiently and effectively.

Wednesday afternoon, the crew placed 9 of the 27 trusses

The crane operator arrived at 715 this morning and went right to work.

Lifting one of the final trusses into place…

The trusses are now all in place, and soon the skin of the building will begin to be attached.

With the trusses complete, the white metal skin of this building will soon follow.

With the sun out today, it will warm up into the 60s, and that should allow us to return to applying NH3 this afternoon.  Maybe I’ll even begin to put down the soybean burndown herbicide, if the wind is low enough for me to run.  That’s the next step toward #plant24.

When the NH3 gets done, I’ll pull the soybean air drill out of storage and get it ready.   I will be using a new tractor on it this year, so it may take some hours to get all the electronics set up.  Brandon has made arrangements for a technician (or two) to come help him get the new corn planter going on its first day.

Planting time is coming soon!   The corn seed is now all on-site.   Nutrien has our soybean seed in its inventory.

I don’t have enough nerve to plant in March, but after the 5th of April (or so), it will be time to turn on the “green light”!
