After Pat’s PT session this morning, we went over to Washington to pick up some produce at Etienne’s Market. Along the way, we saw a few combines in corn and soybean fields. Brandon went out this morning to get samples of corn from the first-planted fields. He got 22.5 and 23.0 percent moisture. That’s good for early September, but we’d prefer it be 20% or less when we start this fall. And you must remember that your hand sample typically reads 2% less than the actual reading you’d get when you actually harvest the sampled field. So, in our area, #harvest 24 is underway. I’m guessing we will get underway one day next week.

22.5% is not bad for September 6, but we’d prefer this hand-sampled number be 18% or less. Maybe in about a week.
In the meantime, Brandon D is out with the JD 6145R tractor and R15 rotary cutter mowing roadsides and riparian strips along streams. He also mowed the new waterway at the Waldo farm. It really looks nice when he gets done.

Here is a portion of the new waterway built last fall at the Waldo farm. The sod has established very well, and the waterway is working as designed. Brandon D mowed it today.
It’s nice to get the field border and riparian strip and waterway mowing done one more time in September, just ahead of harvest. This should keep things looking good far into the fall.
Have a lovely weekend. We have a wedding here at the farm tomorrow. Ross’s granddaughter Hope and her fiancé Jake are tying the knot. The ceremony will be in our tool shed, a concrete block building that was erected here over 70 years ago! A unique venue, and the first-ever wedding to be conducted on this farm!
Have a great weekend! The weather is predicted to be cool and pleasant.
