What a way to start the day/week

Monday, July 14,2014

As we begin the day, we first checked the rain gauge to see what we received in precipitation overnight.  Since midnight, we got 1.57″ (40mm) rain here at the farm.  This is happy news.  The late corn at Lett and Watjen especially needed some moisture.  The soil on those two farm locations have some compaction in the areas where the conservation construction went on in late May.  Frequent rain will help that corn thrive.

Soybeans at the home farm are responding well to the helpful rain we received last night.

All in all, we could not ask for much better growing conditions for our 2014 crops.  We do all we know how to do to manage and care for our corn, soybeans, and wheat.  But it takes the blessing from our Maker to actually ‘make’ a crop.  We’ve learned that we can trust Him to provide.  Through good years and bad, we know that He is working for our good and His glory.

It’s funny how old sayings keep coming to my mind.  I guess that becomes more of a factor as the years go by.  As I ponder how good the growing corn and soybeans look today, I remember a warning from our dad… “don’t start writing checks on it just yet.”   In other words, it’s a long time until we gather in the harvest, and it is far from being complete.  I guess it was his way of saying “don’t count your chickens…”

Even so, we are hopeful about the fall harvest.
