Another step closer to spring

Tuesday, March 11, 2014

Yesterday afternoon, the seed corn was delivered.  With that now in our inventory, we are one step closer to planting season.  Let’s hope we can be placing that seed into the soil in April, but the weather and soil conditions will dictate our schedule.

Neighbors Jeff and Josh Jackson, deliver the seed corn here to the farm. John will use our forklift to place it in our seed storage building. That building is about the only remaining original facility from our 1958 arrival here at this place. For Jeff and Josh, it was their first trip with their brand-new goose-neck trailer. John was very careful not to put a scratch on it!

The soybean seed will remain at the dealer’s warehouse.  It’s only 3-4 miles away, and when we are ready for the first batch, we will send our seed tender truck over there and they will place the seed gently into our truck.  That old orange 10-wheeler truck  is perfect for that task.

We plan to bring the air drill-soybean planter here to the main farm about the last week of March.  It will need some lubrication and a thorough inspection.  Then we can load the air cart and be ready for the first planting day!

70s predicted today… and snow possible tomorrow!   That’s southern Indiana!
