One last step

Yes, there are many combines running around Knox County.  It is just not ours…just yet…  The final piece of the harvest equipment puzzle was assembled this morning.  The Demco 1322 grain cart was hooked up to the JD 9520R tractor.   The tracks and auger drivelines were lubricated.  I think Brandon D will give the tractor a light wash, and then it will all be ready!

Grain cart is hooked up, lubricated, and tested for operation.

…another view

I went out to get some hand samples of ears from the earliest-planted corn field,  A quick moisture test yielded the number 23.2%.    Typically, if you begin harvest after such a test, you will likely get 2 points wetter than a hand-sample.   So, I believe our plan to begin on Monday will allow us to harvest corn lower than 25%.   That’s the goal for  Monday.  Brandon has 20K bushels of corn sold for September, so we will get at least that much harvested over Monday and Tuesday.  After that, we will probably convert over to harvest soybeans.  They are not ready yet, but after the weekend of 90ºF+ temps, my best estimate is that we will have some dry enough to cut!  No rain in the forecast.

#harvest 25 approaches!

On a side note, at Carnahan & Sons, our lingo about harvest goes like this… we “pick corn” and we “cut soybeans”.   Other farmers talk about “cutting” corn, or “threshing” soybeans.  What is the way to say it at your farm?
