We had some snow yesterday morning, and it remained chilly all day–getting up to about 42ºF at best. There was frost on the ground this morning, and the temperature is inching up a bit better today… should get into the mid-50s. Spring is bringing a sunny day today, it just needs to warm a bit.
John is back at work today, and he is preparing our JD R4044 sprayer to use as soon as possible to begin applying a herbicide, fungicide, and growth regulator on the wheat crop. He has to clear away the winterizing anti-freeze from the tank and spray system. Then he will turn the spray nozzles to the correct setup. Finally, he will test the pump and boom to make sure it’s ready. He may not be able to spray just yet because of soft fields and/or windy weather. But soon, he will be fully prepared to begin spraying.
Brandon is planning to go out this afternoon and try again to apply some NH3. It did not rain/snow much, so he should be able to do some more. Not every part of every field is dry enough to work, but he can surely find some fields to get some more nitrogen applied.
I am hoping to go to the Waldo farm this afternoon to use the field cultivator to smooth some ruts that were made last summer. I’ll have to be very selective on where to go, to make sure I’m not scratching through any wet soil. But I think I can do a little bit.
The weather for the next several days has nights in the 30s and 40s, with daytime highs either side of 60. Not wonderful, but do-able.
#plant25 is rapidly approaching. Any work we can get done in March is a bonus. It is typically rare to get much done before Easter, and is Easter relatively late this year (April 20). Bit by bit, step by step…
