#plant24…done?

Friday, June 21, 2024

Yesterday evening, I wrapped up the planting of double-crop soybeans and the replanting at two other fields.  It is a good feeling to have that behind us.  I will not clean up or unhook the soybean air drill just yet… there may be some acres to replant.  We will know that in about 10 days.  The DCB went into the soil pretty nicely…there seemed to be some moisture down there at planting depth, and I’m hopeful those will get started. However, the replant beans went into dry soil, and those will need a rain to get them going.  Pray for a gentle 1 inch (25mm) rain to come soon!

This morning, John washed up the JD 9520R tractor and grain cart.  They didn’t get very dirty at all during wheat harvest.  Brandon is fitting them back into the storage shed.   Now, John is over at Nutrien refilling his water trailer to prepare for some spraying next week.  I have a repair to do on the drill, but the parts will not all be here until next week.  I got the old parts disassembled, ready to reassemble and install on the drill, once the required parts arrive.

I’m glad to be done; I’m always eager to get started in April, and it’s always a relief to drive down that last row in June (or July some years).  It’s rather early really to have the DCB in the ground.

With the DCB and replant caught up, I’ll be able to work at VBS tonight!  It’ll be great to interact with those kids.

Hot days are here now that summer has arrived.  All this week, we’ve hit 90ºF+ and there is no relief in sight.  At least it’s not hitting the century mark!   The corn shows areas in most fields where the corn ‘rolls’ in the heat of the afternoon… but it relaxes at night.  But even the nights are not ‘cool’; the lows are in the low 70s this week.

I want to share a video Brandon took yesterday while I was planting DCB.  He was nearby on his 4-wheeler spraying ditch banks, so he came over and captured this:

I thought this was pretty neat to watch.

Have a beautiful weekend.
