That was a whopper!

Wednesday, May 15, 2024

Yesterday evening, we got a whopper of a rain!  All told, we received 3″ (76mm)!  From 5:30 to about 8 pm, it rained hard, like pouring it out of a bucket!  As I drove home from an elders’ meeting last night, I could see the effects of such a downpour.  The WASCoBs were full, and there was significant flooding in all the usual places.  This morning, the WASCoBs are drained out; they worked like they were designed and built to do.  But the creek-bottom areas that typically flood in rains like that are still covered in water. About 10 acres on the Cox farm near US 50 and about 6 acres on the Waldo farm near IN 550 are currently underwater.

It will be several days before we can return to field work, and more rain is predicted for Friday.  Today, the guys are getting one of the combines ready for wheat harvest.  Because we traded our red combine for a green one, our MacDon header was converted from C-IH to JD a few weeks ago.  Today they are hanging that on the older S780 to get it ready to run.  Hutson’s is sending Robert here today to make sure the MacDon is ready to go on our JD combine.  Wheat harvest is only about 6 weeks away.   The other S780 combine has some performance upgrade kits to install on the grain tank and unloader, and Hutson’s will be responsible for that.

The older S780 now has the MacDon header. Today, we are getting it ready for wheat. Harvest is about 6 weeks away.  There are some sensors that need adjustment in order to get this thing calibrated.

These little wheels control the automatic header height system when harvesting wheat. Typically, when cutting wheat, the cutterbar runs 6-10 inches off the ground, not on the ground as in soybeans

John is also using this rain delay to wash up the sprayer. He keeps it looking good. Maybe even #Andyclean!

Even in the aftermath of a big, big rain, there is still some work that needs our attention!

Brandon got a text from one of the neighbors today.  In it, he asked when was the next meeting of the support group for farmers who can’t get into their fields to plant!

I understand.
