Bin cleaning

Monday, March 2, 2020

Brandon is in a grain bin this morning, running a sweep auger to clean it out.  It is the last of the 2019 soybeans, and when those are delivered, we will be MT of 2019 beans.

John has a new project today.  When he replaced the florescent bulbs in the ceiling of the shop with LEDs, there arose an unintended consequence.  Now, the remote of the door opener will not work if the lights are ‘on’ inside the shop.  So, upon advice from the door company, he is adding a coaxial cable to run the ‘antenna’ outside the building.  Hopefully, that will allow the door’s remote control to operate the door even if the lights are illuminated.

I am preparing the information for the writing of the corn-nitrogen and soybean-seeding prescriptions.  The Agrian program for prescriptions has changed again this year, and I will need some assistance to learn the new system.  That assistance is coming on Friday.  I’ll be ready!

We received some rain during the night, and the day remains overcast.  Yesterday was a beautiful first day of March… you could say it came in “like a lamb”.  It was sunny for the most part, and in the mid-60s for temperature.  Will that mean that is will “go out like a lion”?

We fully expect that some field work will occur this month.  Herbicide applications for wheat, or some initial burndown for corn and soybeans will happen if the field conditions permit.  We will even apply pre-plant nitrogen for corn if we can.  There have been some in our neighborhood who have planted corn or soybeans in late March.  We are believers in ‘early planting’, but we don’t have the nerve to run the planter in March!  But as soon as it becomes April, we want to get those planters going.

As we peer into the unknown of the 2020 season, we look ahead with hope and optimism.   We don’t know what the circumstances will be… wet like ’19 or dry like ’12?   The one who knows is not telling us, but He merely wants us to trust Him.  And we will.

Have a good week.
