Ross went out on his ATV this morning to search for a field dry enough to apply nitrogen. He didn’t find a single field where he was comfortable to start. So, we wait on this very windy day to get started with field operations. At least we are getting some warmth today. Temperature is predicted for 73ºF (23C) today, and a degree or two better tomorrow. Rain they say is coming Saturday, and cooler temps next week, with nights in the low 30s. In addition, it is too windy to spray herbicide on our wheat crop, and those fields are soft, too. That wheat herbicide application would currently be our most urgent need to get behind us.
At least some progress is being made on the leg replacement project. Russell Lashley, our electrician, is on-site again today to install breakers, starters, and to pull some wiring. Even our main construction contractor, Montgomery Welding, brought their small crane to the site yesterday, but it was too windy to work that high off the ground. So, on the next appropriate day, they will return to begin to lower down spouting and the old leg to the ground.
When this project is done, we will have a Creamer Metal Products-brand 10-hole, 8 inch powered distributor to try to sell. It replaced the original cable-operated distributor a few years ago. It has performed well, and should have some life and value left to it. The new one is a 10-inch with greater capacity.
Another good-news report: Our levee along White River at the Nellie farm survived the latest flood crest. It was closer this time, but what a relief that it held fast.
My ‘man-cold’ is slowly improving. I’m breathing somewhat easier, and my sinuses are clearing a bit. Since we can’t get to the field today, I may take some of this warmer afternoon to do some mowing. The grass is a deep, rich, springtime green, and getting a bit big. Hopefully, I’ll be able to give it its first 2018 haircut today.
Wind gusts to 40 mph (64 kph) today. Take care.
