Rainy spell

Monday, August 15, 2016

It was a rainy weekend, and that continues today.  So far, we’ve received about 4.5″ here at the farm, and that’s been fairly uniform across Knox County and the area.  One concern about this rain event is that it has rained throughout the White River valley, from Knox County to Indianapolis… and that is pushing the river forecast above flood stage.  As of this morning, White River shows 2.5 feet above flood stage through next Sunday.   It will bring some damage to the soybeans growing down there in the bottoms, but should not take it all out.   This morning’s report does not take into account the rain falling today and predicted for tomorrow, so the river forecast could change.

Here is the river forecast graph for this morning for West Fork of White River at Edwardsport. Our fields are about 1 day's river flow downstream from Edwardsport.

And now, the current radar…

8 am radar for the region. We are expecting rain for the full day, and some going into tomorrow.

730 am radar for the region. We are expecting rain for the full day, and some going into tomorrow.

We will have to wait to see the full effect of this rain event, and what it does to the river.  Right now, I’m grateful we got the levee repair work completed…it’s just tough to see it tested so soon!  But we expect it to hold a 17.5-foot river.

Today is Ella’s 4th birthday!   We went to her party on Saturday, but I bet we’ll find a way to celebrate again today.   It’s sure hard to believe she’s 4 already!
