Across the finish line…

Monday, June 20, 2016

Last Friday, I was able to return to #replant16.   The planting conditions were quite good after the Wednesday evening rain.  By 3pm, the final rows of 2016 soybeans were placed into the soil.  We will check them today to see how the emergence is going for the newly-planted soybeans at Huey and last Wednesday’s planting at Freddie.  We are hopeful they will emerge and grow satisfactorily.

It’s funny how we are always eager to get the planters hooked up and ready in late March or early April… and later, we are also eager to complete our planting and get the planters unhooked from the tractors!  This year was especially long… first day of soybean planting was April 17; last day was June 17!

After the final patch of replant was covered, here is the last view of the JD 9330 and the JD 1910 air cart and 1JD 1890 NT drill in their field positions

It's official. Planting is over. The tractor made the trip home for a clean-up and to be placed in the shed out of the sun and rain. We like for our equipment to be stored under roof.

It has been an extended adventure to get the planting and replanting done this year.  April and May were quite rainy and cool, turning to warmer and drier during June.  We are liking the weather forecast which predicts some rain coming tomorrow or Wednesday.

Now, we’ll turn our attention to the maintenance of ditches, and the mowing of roadsides. The corn looks especially nice right now.  We still have some 2015 corn to deliver to market.  The recent uptick in the commodity market has been welcome!

Hope you all had a good Fathers’ Day.  I heard from Philip and Ben, and John and his family had supper with us.  Hugs from granddaughters are priceless.  A great day.  Another treat is the spectacular light show put on by the lightning bugs every evening at about 9:45.   I wish I could capture that show in a picture or video.  Really special.

Have a great week.
