We were able to return to harvesting on Thursday afternoon, and we picked corn until late Friday afternoon. We switched over to soybeans about 5pm yesterday, and we were able to cut the two hill fields near home, before it got too damp to cut. It felt good to get going again after 3 days of rain delay. During the delay, we were able to move some corn and soybeans to market. That felt good too.
Here we are in corn.
Today, Larry begins with planting wheat. We plan to plant about 1000 acres of wheat, even though in Kansas some call wheat “poverty grass”. This is a significant increase in acres for us, and will certainly have an impact on our fall harvest work, with Larry in a tractor instead of a truck. He will be running the 9R540 with the 2660VT vertical tillage tool. We use a ‘broadcast’ method to plant our wheat. Nutrien blends the seed in with the granular fertilizer and spreads it on our fields with their truck. Then, Larry comes along and works the blend into the soil. This reduces the wear on our drill, and has been an effective planting method for us for decades.
Larry’s first round this morning. Maybe the soil is a little too heavy, but it’ll get better through the day.
As the guys get the combines ready today, we are now using a new tool to clean air filters… works pretty slick!
Have a good weekend!
