Rainy spell

Friday, July 5, 2024

We’ve entered that typical post-double-crop-soybean planting rainy period.  I’m not sure how long this will last, but yesterday for the 4th we got a 1″ (25mm) rain.  It was so very welcome, and today we are getting another .4″ (1omm).  Most summers, after we plant DCB, we have a week or so of rainy weather.  Of course, that was not true in the drought year of 2012, but it is happening this July.  The days are back down in the 80s instead of the 90s, and that helps the corn that is pollenating.   It’s just a happy day here with a good healthy amount of rain… and not too much! On Wednesday, we missed a big rain event that went just south of us, down at Jasper, Indiana.  There, they got a 4″ rain (102mm)!!  We saw pictures of flooded cars in the streets, and flooded fields of soybeans.  Ouch.  Please pray for those affected.

The morning looked pretty serious with these clouds in the west. But no damage… just a nice 1 inch rain.  The sun was out most of the afternoon.

The morning rain came gently…

Over the next couple of weeks, Brandon and I will see that our soybean fields receive their fungicide treatment, as the beans reach the proper stage.  We will also be applying the herbicide to the DCB when the time gets right.  Those will be the two most critical tasks for July.  In among that, I will also be mowing roadsides and riparian strips along some ditch banks.

We had a delightful 4th.  Pat prepared a delicious meal with juicy hamburgers and her super-tasty potato salad.  Our youth minister came to share the meal with us.  Later, John and our granddaughters came over for an extended visit.  All in all, a wonderful day!

With the rainy spell, there won’t be any spraying or roadside mowing until the sun shines again!

Have a lovely weekend.
